仕事内容
As part of Fastly's Kernel and Host Networking team, we are responsible for developing and maintaining the Linux kernel that operates on every server in our global edge network. Our role involves addressing technical challenges from start to finish; this includes diagnosing issues from crash signatures or new Network Interface Cards (NICs), conducting root cause analysis, designing solutions, and ensuring their safe implementation across thousands of servers. The work encompasses several domains including networking, XDP and eBPF, memory management, performance optimization, and hardware integration. It is crucial to maintain system correctness amidst continuous changes in the control planes of our distributed systems.
Our tasks include setting technical directions for kernel projects and taking new servers, CPUs, and NICs from initial boot to full deployment across the fleet. We enhance datapath and transport performance, solving cross-layer issues with application teams, and develop kernel modifications while working to upstream changes. We ensure that updates pushed to eBPF and XDP programs are correctly implemented and easily reversible.
We are also accountable for the kernel's production health, involving triage of crashes, warnings, and regressions, identifying root causes, and deploying fixes. Another critical aspect of our role is managing and refining the kernel release process, overseeing everything from continuous integration to large-scale deployments, and ensuring operational stability with crash metrics and drift detection systems. Participation in on-call rotations and incident response is also a key component of the role.
We look for engineers with over 7 years of relevant experience, particularly in production Linux kernel development and expertise in areas like the Linux network stack, XDP or eBPF, and distributed system architecture. Skills in leading projects, debugging, and operational discipline are essential. Advanced contributions to kernel development or knowledge in specialized fields such as transport protocols and hardware enablement are highly valued.

| その他 | - **応募要件**: 7+ years of related engineering experience, including substantial production C, with 3 of those years leading technical projects. Production Linux kernel development, including debugging use-after-free, refcount and leak bugs with KASAN, kdump, ftrace, perf or bpftrace. Working knowledge of the scheduler and memory management (EEVDF, memcg). Experience managing a kernel patch stack and working with upstream communities. Solid understanding of the Linux network stack (TCP/IP, sk_buff lifecycle, qdiscs, NIC drivers) and XDP or eBPF, with deep expertise in at least one of these areas. Operational discipline: staged rollouts, canaries, kill switches, observability, postmortems and closing action items. Understanding of distributed systems: control plane and datapath consistency, partial failure and safe config rollout at fleet scale.
